Special guests from the world of professional hockey, including some familiar NHL faces, will be joining us to help launch <em><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstrong.net\/i-am-brainstrong\/\">I Am BrainSTRONG<\/a><\/em> \u2014 a program that\u2019s all about flipping the script on helmet use. Just like the NHL did back in 1979 when they made helmets mandatory, this initiative aims to drive a culture shift. But here\u2019s the catch: unlike hockey, there are no referees on city streets to make sure kids (or adults) wear a helmet when biking. That decision? It\u2019s entirely up to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why <em><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstrong.net\/i-am-brainstrong\/\">I Am BrainSTRONG<\/a><\/em> will exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re not just handing out helmets and hoping they get worn. We\u2019re not putting up rules and hoping people follow them. We\u2019re creating a movement\u2014one that helps kids (and the adults around them) <em>want<\/em> to wear a helmet, instead of feeling like they <em>have<\/em> to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Look Back at the NHL: What It Can Teach Us<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rewind to 1979. The NHL\u2014after years of resistance\u2014finally mandated that all new players entering the league wear helmets. Veterans were allowed to opt out (grandfathered in), and some did. But as time went on, more and more players recognized the value in protecting their heads. The initial push was met with reluctance, even mockery. But now?  Not a single NHL player would dream of stepping onto the ice without a helmet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The change wasn\u2019t just in the rulebook\u2014it was in mindset. And it worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the model <em><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstrong.net\/i-am-brainstrong\/\">I Am BrainSTRONG<\/a><\/em> is taking inspiration from. But without referees or penalties, what must happen will be even bigger. We&#8217;re trying to make helmet safety a personal <em><strong>identity choice<\/strong><\/em>, not just a safety one. Something that starts from within, and spreads outward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Real World Has No Referees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you\u2019re biking on the road, there\u2019s no whistle-blowing official to stop you and say, \u201cPut your helmet on.\u201d There\u2019s no penalty box for ignoring safety. The consequences are far worse. An impact to the head from a fall or a collision with a vehicle can cause life-altering injuries in seconds. Some of them are visible. Many are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most acquired brain injuries (ABIs) are <em>invisible<\/em>. There\u2019s no cast, no scar, no obvious sign. But they change lives permanently. They affect memory, mood, mobility, and the very essence of who a person is. And unlike a bad haircut or scraped knee, these injuries don\u2019t grow out or fade away. They\u2019re with you for life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what are we waiting for? A referee to make it official? A new law? Or worse, a personal tragedy to make us realize what\u2019s at stake?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why \u201cHindsight is 20\/20\u201d won&#8217;t matter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve all heard the phrase \u201chindsight is 20\/20.\u201d It\u2019s what people say after they\u2019ve made a mistake they wish they could take back. But for someone who\u2019s suffered a serious brain injury after falling off a bike without a helmet, hindsight isn\u2019t helpful. It\u2019s cruel, because once it happens, you can\u2019t rewind the clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why we\u2019re inviting everyone\u2014<em>especially kids<\/em>\u2014to make the choice <em><strong>before<\/strong><\/em> anything happens. To say proudly:<br><br><strong>\u201cMy name is [first name], I live in [city, province], and I\u2019ll wear my helmet when biking\u2014because I am BrainSTRONG!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The intent is that it&#8217;s more than just a pledge, it\u2019s a change in mindset. And it\u2019s one we want to spread across schools, cycling clubs, neighbourhoods, and eventually, across the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The January Press Conference: A Turning Point<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, when we hold our press conference, it won\u2019t just be another event. It\u2019ll be a <em><strong>launchpad<\/strong><\/em>. NHL players\u2014who know firsthand the impact of invisible injuries\u2014will be there to lend their voices, their stories, and their star power to help amplify our message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019ll share what it was like to see the NHL shift toward safety. They\u2019ll talk about concussions and head trauma, and how their lives (and careers) have been changed by injuries most people never see. And they\u2019ll help underline the urgency of helmet safety <em>outside<\/em> the rink, where the stakes are just as high, if not higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A New Kind of Cool<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s face it\u2014some kids don\u2019t want to wear helmets because they don\u2019t think it\u2019s cool. That\u2019s what we\u2019re here to change. Being <em><strong>BrainSTRONG<\/strong><\/em> means being proud of protecting your brain. It means standing tall and saying, \u201cI made the smart choice. I choose safety. I choose <em>me<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not about fear\u2014it\u2019s about identity. Just like a jersey shows your team, your helmet shows you\u2019re <strong>BrainSTRONG<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Join Us<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So as we look ahead to the press conference, we hope you\u2019ll join us in spirit\u2014or in person\u2014and help us take the next step in changing the way the world sees helmets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn\u2019t just about protection.
